When to go to the Solovki

The Solovki Islands are beautiful at any time of the year. Every time you come to the islands, you experience them in a new way.

SUMMER

They usually travel to the Solovetsky Archipelago in summer (June-August), people have been doing that since the ancient monastery times. It's because in the summer it's a lot easier to get to the Solovki. You can get to the archipelago by a ferry from Kem and Belomorsk, by a motorship or a plane from Arkhangelsk.

Summer is the perfect time for hiking and biking on the islands. You can enjoy the white nights from June to July, in August you can watch beautiful sunsets and sunrises. At the end of July the mosquito time ends on the Solovki, before this period we recommend you to provide yourself with repellents. "Mosquitos are the most dangerous predators on the Solovki", the locals joke, but besides mosquitos there is really nothing to worry about in the Solovki forests.

In August blueberries begin to ripen, in July forests already have mushrooms, so set aside some time for forest walks during your program. Despite the warm weather on the beach, it can get quite chilly during the seawalks, consider it and take some warm clothes.

There is the 'beluga' season on the Solovki from June to August, this is a great opportunity to take a close look at these sea animals, and learn how they breed.

Summer is also rich with various holidays – we have the Navy Day, “Solovetskaya regatta” yachting competitions, folk craft festival “The Solovki fair”; in August we remember the victims of political repressions and hold an art song festival “On the Solovki Islands”. “The Solovki week” starts on August 19th, when the series of the main Orthodox Solovki events are held (August 19th – The Transfiguration if the Christ, August 22nd - The Synaxis of All Saints of Solovki, August 23rd – The Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Solovki, August 28th – The Assumption Day).

AUTUMN

Autumn on Solovki is a real rave of colour. Forests try on bright red and yellow robes, tundra vegetation carpet is painted in incredible colours. Autumn is one of the best times for visiting the Solovki archipelago, Solovki’s summer usually lasts until mid-September, and there are sunny and clear days there. In the woods mushrooms and berries ripen, while there are no mosquitoes. Navigation continues until October, aircraft from Arkhangelsk flies regularly. As well as in the summer, you can book tours, rent a bicycle or a car.

WINTER

Winter is a quiet time in Solovki. If you want to escape from the city and everyday worries, this is what you need. It offers excursions, including active snowmobile tours to different islands and the Solovetsky Skete. Only in the winter in a short time you can visit a large number of Solovetsky attractions. In winter, the Solovki fortress wall highlights the artistic lighting, which emphasizes the greatness and power of the ancient monument. During winter the northern lights happen very often. In winter, tourists and pilgrims often come to Solovki during Epiphany and Christmas; this is a great opportunity to visit the monastic divine services. During winter the only way to get to the Solovki is by plane from Arkhangelsk.

SPRING

Spring on the Solovki is mostly the bright sun and white snow. Spring is ideal for hiking and skiing (ice is pretty strong and you can walk on it even on foot) and snowmobile rides. It’s warm in the spring, but ice and snow melting process begins only at the end of April. The Solovetsky village widely celebrates Maslenitsa (Carnival), in April you can visit Solovki at Easter celebrations. March-April is a great time for photo tours and just admiring the Solovki nature. Be sure to bring sunglasses, spring sun is very active, you can get a suntan in a week at this time of the year. During this period the only way to get to the Solovki is by plane from Arkhangelsk. But in the second half of May sea links begin with Kem.
